The kayak is one of the most popular boat types in the world and classes in building the full variety of them are one of the most popular adult classes offered at the Center both from kits and from scratch. Kayak building classes can be organized as a family affair and are generally set up as an independent study for after work and weekend hours.

A most basic boat, The 6-hour canoe, is at the heart of the BMC’s educational programming. Designed by Founding member Dr. John Montague, and made popular around the world in a small paperback book, Building the 6 Hour Canoe with co-founder Richard Butz, hundreds of would be boatbuilders have made these usable and seaworthy boats their first project. Building the 6 hour canoe is another way of getting family members involved in a personal dream to build a boat at BMC.
